The 10th Science Council of Japan Symposium on Informatics

January 12, 2017. 13:30-18:00
Auditorium at Science Council of Japan
(7-22-34 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan)

This symposium features talks and a panel discussion pertaining to research trends, issues, and future directions on Informatics, during which we have discussions on various topics on and around Informatics from national policies promoting scientific research to the impact of Information Technology on our future society. IoT, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and cyber security are hot topics in Informatics today and draw more and more attention from both academia and industry throughout the world. It is foreseen that advances in these research fields would make daily lives and industry more networked and smarter, as envisioned in the Super Cyber Society, proposed in Japan's 5th fundamental plan for science and technology, and Smart and Connected Communities in the United States. From the perspective of advancement of science, open science also plays an important role. We would like to throughly discuss how enhancement of these information technologies and preparation of relevant platforms make an impact on future society.

We have two notable invited speakers, one from NSF in the United States and the other from CCF in China. They have talks about recent research strategies in Informatics or Information Technology. We also have a speaker from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology of Japan, who introduces the recent trend in policies related to information and communication technology followed by expectations and demands to the informatics community. The committee on Informatics also introduces its recent activities and hosts a panel session to discuss open science. Through these talks and discussions, we aim to clarify the current position of informatics, which would help activity of the committee.
